Practice Areas

Stiles teaches courses on nineteenth-century British and American literature, science fiction, children's literature, and medical humanities. She is interested in working with graduate and undergraduate students researching these and related subjects.

Research Interests

Stiles's research explores intersections between literature, science, and religion in nineteenth-century Britain and North America. She is the author of Children鈥檚 Literature and the Rise of 鈥淢ind Cure鈥: Positive Thinking and Pseudo-Science at the Fin de Si猫cle (Cambridge UP, 2020) and Popular Fiction and Brain Science in the Late Nineteenth Century (Cambridge UP, 2012). She edited Neurology and Literature, 1866-1920 (Palgrave, 2007) and co-edited two volumes published by Elsevier in 2013 as part of their Progress in Brain Research series. She has held long-term grants from the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (AY 2016-2017); the Huntington Library (AY 2009-2010); and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AY 2006-2007).
