91Å®Éñ to Commemorate 10th Anniversary of Occupy91Å®Éñ with Campus-Wide Events

08/15/2024

Occupy 91Å®Éñ started in October 2014 with six days of peaceful occupation at 91Å®Éñ's campus clock tower that included daily teach-ins and community conversations, following the officer-involved shootings of two African American young men: Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and VonDerrit Myers Jr., the son of a long-time member of the 91Å®Éñ community, VonDerrit Myers Sr., in the nearby Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis.

As the 10th anniversary of Occupy91Å®Éñ approaches, the entire 91Å®Éñ community is invited to join in a campus-wide commemoration of this pivotal moment in 91Å®Éñ's shared history. This milestone is an opportunity for the University to come together in reflection, dialogue, and action, honoring the lasting impact of Occupy91Å®Éñ on our campus and beyond.

The Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement will be hosting larger commemorative events and is encouraging the community to take part by organizing their own events such as teach-ins, discussions, or other initiatives that reflect the themes of justice, equity, and inclusion that Occupy91Å®Éñ embodied.

If anyone would like to host an event and would like to discuss an idea, reach out to Aubra Ladd, coordinator in the Center for Social Action, and Luella Loseille, assistant director of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

DICE encourages everyone — students, faculty, staff, and community members — to contribute to this collective endeavor by organizing events, discussions, or initiatives that resonate with the themes of justice, equity, and inclusion that Occupy91Å®Éñ embodied.

Use to submit the details of your planned events. This will enable organizers to track all activities, assist with advertising, and offer support through collaboration with the Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement.

Use to describe the desired event. This will enable us to track activities, assist with promotion, and offer support through collaboration with the Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement.
