Clinic & Field Placement Application Information

91女神 LAW guarantees every eligible and interested student one law clinic or field placement experience. While effort is made to accommodate student preferences, students may not always receive their first-choice preference for such guaranteed law clinic or field placement experience.

Five students wearing formal attire stand in a line. They are holding yellow certifcates for the 2019 CLEA and David Grant finalists awards. They are standing in front of a wall that have silver words spelling out 'Louis W. Riethman Jr'. The students' head are in front of some of the letters.

Legal Clinics Application Information

To participate in a clinic, a student must

  • be eligible for a student practice license, including the requirement to complete at least half of the credit hours required for graduation prior to the semester for which he or she is applying;
  • have completed Legal Profession prior to the semester for which he or she is applying or (with permission of the faculty member teaching the clinic) enroll in Legal Profession in the same semester for which he or she is applying;
  • be able to devote sufficient time to his or her clinic work (45 hours for every credit hour, graded on a p/np basis); and
  • be able to concurrently enroll in the companion course associated with the clinic for which he or she is applying (2 credit-hour graded course) (Clinic I students only).

Clinic registration occurs through a designated application and registration process; students cannot self-register for clinics. Upon acceptance into a clinic, a student may not drop the course unless he or she has written approval from the relevant faculty member. Given the planning necessary to ensure quality student experiences in clinics, this approval is granted only in extraordinary circumstances.

Students interested in participating in a clinic are invited to attend registration information sessions that typically occur each year in September (for spring registration information) and February (for summer and fall registration information).

In addition, students may contact Professor Kathryn Banks (kathryn.banks@slu.edu) to discuss questions related to clinic opportunities.

Field Placement Application Information

To participate in a field placement, a student must

  • have completed at least the equivalent of one year of his or her legal education (if requesting a judicial placement) or be eligible for a student practice license, including the requirement to complete at least half of the credit hours required for graduation (if requesting any placement other than judicial) prior to the semester for which he or she is applying;
  • have completed Legal Profession prior to the semester for which he or she is applying or (with permission of the faculty member teaching the field placement) enroll in Legal Profession in the same semester for which he or she is applying;
  • be able to devote sufficient time to his or her field placement work (50 hours for every credit hour, graded on a p/np basis); and
  • be able to concurrently enroll in the companion course associated with the placement for which he or she is applying (1 credit-hour graded course) (Judicial Process and Field Placement I students only).

Field placement registration occurs through a designated application and registration process; students cannot self-register for field placements. Upon acceptance into a field placement, a student may not drop the course unless he or she has written approval from the relevant faculty member. Given the planning necessary to ensure quality student experiences and preserve good relationships with field placement sites, this approval is granted only in extraordinary circumstances.

Due to the nature of the work that takes place at field placement sites and the potential for conflicts of interest, many placements restrict or prohibit concurrent outside employment (e.g., employment with a law firm) during the placement experience. In addition, some placement sites may require extensive background checks and conflicts checks, have citizenship restrictions, prefer certain course prerequisites, and require other paperwork.

Students interested in participating in a field placement are invited to attend registration information sessions that typically occur each year in September (for spring registration information) and February (for summer and fall registration information).
