The AHEAD Institute and our collaborative researchers have dedicated efforts to the field of addiction medicine, examining substance use disorders (SUD) prevalent among individuals of childbearing age. This vulnerable population has remained a focal point at 91Å®Éñ/SSM, and we look forward to the potential positive impact of our collaborators' publications and future investigations in addiction medicine.

As researchers and healthcare professionals, it is essential that we understand the prevalence, patterns, and impact of SUD among different demographic groups. Successful strategies for prevention, treatment, and support of those with SUD are only possible when we allocate our resources and expertise in the matter. Delve into our exploration of the sociocultural determinants that shape the lives and health outcomes of mothers with SUD and their infants.

As the Director of the AHEAD Institute and Chair of the Department of Health and Clinical Outcomes Research, Dr. Leslie Hinyard aims to integrate the 91Å®Éñ's principle of cura personalis into the approach of our faculty and staff. The university's social justice foundation deeply informs our department's messaging and activities. The continuous challenge of all health outcomes researchers is to critically assess how cura personalis and social justice can have a stronger presence in our roles as a clinicians, researchers, faculty, staff and students.  

Recently, Dr. Hinyard and her esteemed colleagues authored a policy statement in the American Society of Clinical Oncology Journal, addressing social determinants of health and health-related social needs in cancer care. The AHEAD Institute partnered with faculty from the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics on a study to describe the availability of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data in a large, Catholic health care system. This retrospective chart review found that while data on sex was available in the majority of the population (99.9%), data on sexual orientation and gender were reported for smaller proportions (7.4% and 4.5%, respectively).

According to author Dr. Whitney Linsenmeyer, assistant professor and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, SOGI are essential demographic data that should be routinely collected alongside other demographic data (e.g. age, race, ethnicity). When researchers do not collect accurate and thorough SOGI data, they misrepresent or underrepresent sexual and gender minorities in the population. The lack of SOGI data presents a challenge for administrators of Catholic health institutions, who must determine how to adhere to standards of care for sexual and gender minority patients while also navigating conflicting guidance from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
