Big Ten Alliance Summer Research Opportunities

The Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is a gateway to graduate education at Big Ten Academic Alliance universities. SROP helps prepare undergraduates for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities.

First Year Research Experience Program

The First Year Research Experience (FYRE) program allows students to:

  • Work on a project that has been designed specifically for a first-year student
  • Complete an abbreviated application focused on your coursework and research interests with the assistance of  faculty or the Leadership Alliance coordinator at your institution
  • Participate in a cohort of undergraduate students conducting similar research
  • Get matched with a mentor to guide you through networking at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium
Leadership Alliance Mellon Initiative

The Leadership Alliance Mellon Initiative (LAMI) program is for undergraduates interested in pursuing doctoral study in the humanities and social sciences.

McNair Scholars Program

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO program funded at 151 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico by the U.S. Department of Education. It is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. McNair participants are either first-generation college students with financial need, or members of a group that is traditionally underrepresented in graduate education and have demonstrated strong academic potential. The goal of the McNair Scholars Program is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society.

Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program

Each year, new Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) Program undergraduate fellows are selected from applicants in the rising junior classes of MMUF member institutions. These fellows join the rising and graduating senior fellows in their institution’s MMUF program, where they are provided with mentoring and financial support as they prepare for entry into PhD programs and eventual careers as scholars and faculty members.

The MMUF program also supports fellows enrolled in Ph.D. programs in eligible fields through a suite of programmatic events and grant opportunities. This support continues beyond graduate school into fellows’ postdoctoral and faculty careers.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates

Supports intensive research by undergraduate students in any National Science Foundation-funded area of research. Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) sites engage a cohort of students in research projects related to a theme. REU Supplements engage students in research related to a new or ongoing NSF research award.

Summer Research Early Identification Program

The Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) is a fully paid summer internship that provides undergraduates with training and mentoring in the principles underlying the conduct of research and prepares them to pursue competitive applications to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs.
