Undergraduate Curriculum

As an undergraduate student in the 91Å®Éñ Department of Communication, you will choose from three concentration areas within the major program: communication studies, integrated strategic communication, or journalism and media studies. At 91Å®Éñ, you also have the option to pursue a communication-related minor or microcredential.

You will develop strong oral, written and digital communication skills by choosing any of our three concentrations. We emphasize the importance of ethics, critical thinking and cultural competence across the curriculum.

3+3 Accelerated B.A./J.D. Program

The Department of Communication offers a in partnership with 91Å®Éñ Law. Eligible students can complete a B.A. in communication and a J.D. in six years. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. 

The Robert-Honigfort Journalism Scholarship 

The Department of Communication is excited to offer the Robert-Honigfort Journalism Scholarship. This scholarship supports incoming 91Å®Éñ freshmen and transfer students majoring in communication with a concentration in journalism and media studies. Contact Interim Department Chair Tim Huffman, Ph.D., at tim.huffman@slu.edu to apply. Funds will be offered on an availability basis. The priority deadline is Feb. 1. 

Minor Programs

The at 91Å®Éñ allows you to complement another major with the essential knowledge and skills that the study of communication provides. You can work with your Department of Communication mentor to create a course plan suited to your interests and goals. 

Below are a few examples that illustrate how obtaining a communication minor can serve diverse interests:

  • Interested in strategic communication? Take elective classes like Writing for Public Relations and Integrated Communications Campaigns.
  • Interested in digital media? Take elective classes like Video Production and Design and Publication Design.
  • Interested in legal studies? Take elective classes like Free Expression or Argumentation and Debate.
  • Interested in fostering healthy relationships? Take elective classes like Interpersonal Communication and Family Communication.
